L: Look at the person who is speaking.

 

A: Ask questions to show your interest and your comprehension.

 

D: Don’t interrupt, and don’t think about what you’re going to say next.

 

D: Don’t change the subject.

 

E: Empathize. Try to really understand the other person’s perspective.

 

R: Respond—both verbally and nonverbally. Show with your words and your body language that you heard—and understood—every word the other person said.
